LCIA QLD Event – Back to basics: What is Lean and its application

For this presentation we go back to basics. The basic principles of Lean will be explored and you will be given insight into what leading owners, designers, contractors and sub-contractors have gained from implementing lean practices on their projects and in their businesses.

The first speaker, Paul Tilley will provide an overview of Lean principles and how they can be applied within a construction context.

The second speaker, Marton Marosszeky will share the lessons he has learned from the number of case studies he has researched for his forthcoming book. He will present on the benefits of lean for clients, designers, contractors and subcontractors.

Marton is a civil engineer with early experience in road construction and contract supervision. He spent 7 years as a structural designer with Civil and Civic and worked on the MLC Centre in Sydney, the tallest concrete building in the world at that time. He spent half of his career at UNSW, his career there ending as the Multiplex Professor of Construction Innovation.

Finally, he has been a consultant in lean process improvement for the past 10 years, he has worked in Canada, Russia, the US and Australia helping teams to adopt lean thinking in building construction, infrastructure and the oil and gas sector. He has just co-authored his second book on lean implementation in construction titled “Total Construction Management: Lean Quality in Capital Project Delivery”, to be published in January 2017.

Paul Tilley

Paul completed his Bachelor of Applied Science, Building, at the Queensland Institute of Technology in 1982 and, his Masters of Project Management at the Queensland University of Technology in 1998. Paul has gained extensive construction industry, research and academic experience over a 41 year period, working for a number of public and private organisations, in a variety of roles.

Joining the CSIRO in 1995, Paul first became aware of Lean and Lean Construction and how it aligned with his research interests relating to construction process improvement. Paul’s interest in Lean Construction led him to the UK in 2004, where he work at the University of Salford, the University of Strathclyde, the University of Dundee and Loughborough University before returning to Australia in 2009. Since then he has become a Lecturer in Construction Management… initially at Queensland University of Technology, before joining the University of Southern Queensland in 2012.
