LCIA VICTORIA EVENT – LEAN in practice; from Government projects to drones

The LCIA Victoria’s goals are to:
• Provide leadership and facilitate the LEAN conversation
• Collaborate with like-minded LEAN organisations
• Inform and educate about LEAN principles, tools and techniques available
• Encourage the adoption of a holistic LEAN approach
• Recognise LEAN practitioners and organisations

This LEAN in Practice event will offer 3 very different perspectives on the topic. “From Government Projects to Drones and all things Lean in between” is perhaps our most diverse presentation evening yet and we hope this stimulates your mind into insightful discussion.

Our speakers include:

Warwick Stannus 
Group Engineering Manager
Warwick is the Group Engineering Manager for the A.G. Coombs Group, one of Australia’s leading building services specialists, and has been responsible for optimising the linkages between Group’s lean design and construction workflows, Building Information Modelling and off-site fabrication. These capabilities in recent years have played a central role in the delivery of some of Australia’s highest profile commercial, healthcare and data centre projects.

Warwick has also been extensively involved in driving BIM adoption and construction innovation in Australia through his role as Technical Director for the AMCA’s BIM-MEPAUS initiative and leads the its technical strategy, international benchmarking processes and standards development. 

Warwick’s presentation will explore lean D&C project delivery as well as the challenges involved in overcoming current industry practices to ingrain lean thinking as a sustainable competitive advantage.

His presentation is titled “Achieving Lean D&C Project Delivery Through Project Collaboration, BIM and Lean Construction Integration”.

Dr Lihai Zhang 
Senior Lecturer in the Department of Infrastructure Engineering
University of Melbourne 
Dr Zhang is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Infrastructure Engineering at The University of Melbourne, and also an Adjunct Associate Professor at Monash University. He received his Master of Engineering degree from the National University of Singapore and PhD from University of Melbourne. He worked as a Civil/Structural design engineer in Singapore for more than five years. 

The research of Dr Zhang focuses on infrastructure asset management, particularly in the area of life cycle performance of road structures using advanced non-destructive testing techniques. His work has gradually been translated into industrial application through national and international academic-industry partnerships. He has published around 80 technical papers and attracted more than $7M research funding. 

Dr Zhang’s presentation is titled “Life cycle infrastructure asset management using advanced non-destructive techniques”. 

Leon Choo 
Senior Quality Advisor
Lean & Six Sigma Consultant 
Leon is a qualified Lean Six Sigma black belt and Quality specialist. He is currently engaged as a Senior Quality Advisor with the Level Crossings Removal Authority. Prior to this he held various senior roles in the manufacturing, engineering and service industries as a lead practitioner and consultant in Australasia, China, Hong Kong and South East Asian countries. One of his major career highlights is being enlisted as the Lean Six Sigma consultant for DHL Express and DHL Global Forwarding. He has also provided LSS and quality consultancy and training services to some global organisations such as Standard Chartered bank, Dell Computers, Panasonic, Hitachi Semiconductor, Western Digital and Vitasoy.   

Leon’s presentation is titled “Strategic Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Initiative – DHL Story”.

DHL embarked on a global LSS initiative known as “First Choice” to be a world leading logistic service provider through improvement in customer experience. Sanctioned by their board and led by their CEO, this transformation program had made a significant improvement to DHL business. Customer satisfaction, service delivery and profitability have improved since the implementation of this initiative. 

Leon will share some of the insights of DHL success in implementing their LSS initiative and the key learnings that can be applied to major infrastructure projects.
